Tsinghua Unigroup expands into cloud services
China IT conglomerate Tsinghua Unigroup started investment projects designed to step up the development of its cloud business and become the country's strongest public cloud service provider, writes Digitimes.com citing group chairman Zhao Weiguo. Zhao said his group just entered into a strategic cooperation pact with the Tianjin government to build a CNY 12 billion (USD 1.88 billion) base in the northern Chinese city as its national headquarters for cloud business. To be located in the Tianjin Binhai Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, the headquarters will house 2,000 top-notch engineers to help turn Tianjin into a smart, digital city.
Both sides will cooperate in many fields, including smart city development, industrial internets, security information going cloud, and industry development funds.
The group also recently started the construction of a CNY 600 million chip and cloud centre in the Chengdu Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, northwestern China. This centre is scheduled to be officially opened in June 2020. Zhao said that the centre will serve as a new-generation IT R&D platform, with all the high-tech enterprises under Tsinghua Unirgroup as well as prestigious enterprises maintaining partnerships with the group's existing two core business segments, chips and cloud networks, to have high-end engineers station there.
